Graduate Student Organization Travel Award Program

The Graduate Student Organization (GSO), in conjunction with the Graduate College and ASNAU, awards travel funds for graduate and professional students who are presenting research at or attending academic or professional conferences. (In cases where an applicant will not be making a presentation, the student statement and the faculty letter of recommendation included in the travel award application should explicitly explain the importance of attendance for the student's professional development.)

Please submit all questions concerning the Travel Award Program to the GSO Office: gso@nau.edu

Submission Deadlines:

Applications must be received by 5:00pm on the deadline date. In the event that a given deadline does not fall on a business day, applications must be received by noon of the first business day following the posted deadline. Aside from the preceding exception, there are NO deadline extensions, and late applications will not be considered. Travel must be completed within the specified travel dates listed above. Applications for support for travel that is concluded prior to a submission deadline will not be considered.

Eligibility:

Selection Criteria:

The competition for these awards is very great, so every effort must be made to clearly demonstrate the value of the proposed travel to the applicant's professional development. Travel Award evaluators especially appreciate and give due weight to thoughtful, focused student applications.

For more information on the specific criteria the travel award committee uses to evaluate each travel award, please see the GSO Travel Award Evaluation Form.

Range of support:

Awards are contingent upon the availability of funds and the number of applications. The committee will award up to $300.00 per student, even though the cost of attending the conference may exceed that amount. A maximum of three days hotel will be covered.

Students are eligible to receive one travel award per fiscal year. A student may apply as many times as desired.

Students are highly encouraged to apply according to their financial need. Realistic award amounts will receive a higher grade during evaluation. The student's efforts to obtain other sources of funding will be viewed positively by the committee.

Notification of Awards:

All applicants will be promptly notified as to whether they will or will not receive a travel award, once all of the applications have been reviewed. The process of award determination generally takes two to three weeks and begins after the deadline.

Additional Comments:

Applications are reviewed by a committee of the Graduate College Dean and graduate students on the GSO Executive Committee who represent various colleges across campus. Retroactive travel awards or awards for travel in progress at the time of application deadline will not be considered. It is the responsibility of the student to provide clear justification for travel to conferences outside of the United States and Canada. Participation in meetings organized or supported solely by a for-profit commercial entity will not be considered for funding. All receipts for conference expenses covered by the GSO Travel Award Program must be turned into Mary Lou Galyon, NAU, Office Specialist for ASNAU, P.O. Box 6003, Flagstaff, AZ 86004 within 5 days of completing travel if students want to be reimbursed. The reimbursement process can take up to four weeks.

Application Format and Submission:

A complete application must include five copies of the following materials, in the specified order, individually stapled or securely paper-clipped (for distribution to the GSO Travel Award Selection Committee):

1. A completed application (download application) with anticipated budget,

2. An abstract of the student’s research to be presented at the conference, and
